Discussion:
DOS command ">/C blat ..." giving me problems

Hi All,

I am trying to use blat to automate emailed reports for my office.
We have a database system that can shell out to DOS and perform
single commands. Whenever we shell out to DOS within a program we
have to use DOS's "/C" command so that it will then return to the
original command processor.

I can't seem to get multiple attachments wrapped in double quotes to
work. The exact same command executing from our DOS shell without
the "/C" works fine. Also note that I can get this to work if the
filenames are not in quotes (but then no filenames can have spaces)
or if I use "-attach " before each filename. Any thoughts?

/C blat - -body "Test Email Body Text"

-cc ***@domain.com

Use the -OF option to store your options into a temporary file. In your
program, write all the Blat command line options to a temp file, the shell
to DOS with the /C option and -OF for Blat. For example:

command /c blat.exe -of tempfile.txt

Thanks for the reply. I gave this a try just now and it seems that
the -of will only work if the attachment filename/path is not wrapped
in double quotes so then I'm back at the limitation of using filenames
without spaces. It seems to work fine if I just duplicate the "-
attach" command for each attachment though.

Using temporary filenames without spaces is a problem? Can you please explain why?

Blat -of tempfilenamewithoutspaces

Please list exactly the command line arguments you want to pass to Blat, and we can then provide a solution that _will_ work.

The -of filename without spaces is not the issue. When I use -attach
argument within the -of file it will not work like this:

-attach "filename","filename"

my two options are to use the -of file with an argument like this:
-attach filename, filename (in the -of file)

or put an "-attach" label in front of each filename if I want to use
quotes (in the actual blat... command line):
-attach "filename"
-attach "filename"

It's no biggie though, I'm using the second option at this time and
its working fine. It's just a solution I didn't find in the syntax so
I thought there was something I was missing.

Uh, I have to disagree here. I just now used blat.exe from the 2.50
distribution to send attachments like above, and everything came
through perfectly. This is my command line:

blat B.TXT -of b.txt -superdebug -log \blat.log

This is my B.TXT file that I created using Notepad:

-attach "Write Read.asm","walk.asm"
-s "Testing attachments with spaces"
-t myself

Here is blat.log, with my company information removed:

I believe it worked for you with that command but what I'm saying is that it
doesn't work when you need to use the "/C" along with it.

Subject: [blat] Re: DOS command ">/C blat ..." giving me problems
Post by ultratwista
The -of filename without spaces is not the issue. When I use -attach
-attach "filename","filename"
-attach filename, filename (in the -of file)
or put an "-attach" label in front of each filename if I want to use

The content of your temporary file has nothing to do with the /C
option for cmd.exe. Show exactly your source code where you pass a
string to cmd.exe and let us show you how to solve the problem. So
far, Blat is not the problem, the problem is in how you pass strings
to cmd.exe from within your application and you've not shown us what
you are doing so we can solve the root problem. I don't need the
entire program, I need to see only the lines specific to building your
string and passing it to cmd.exe.
